DFC have been appointed on Exchange Square to provide fire strategy advice for this large scale, four building, 600 private rental apartment scheme.
Ranging from 8 to 25 storeys, the blocks are served by single stairs incorporating a mix of studio, one and two bedroom apartments.
Key fire strategy challenges include extending the dead end travel distances up to 30m. Extended distances are made possible by enhanced smoke ventilation to the common corridors. An enhanced ventilation system increases occupant and fire fighter safety whilst also enabling the removal of 4 stairs from the scheme.
DFC staff have been involved in the redrafting of residential fire safety standard BS9991. This knowledge has enabled clear guidance and advice to be provided on the adoption of open plan apartments.
